Yes, this is a clickbait title. However, it is for good reason. You will not be disappointed with the resource I’ve found recently through my Advanced Java class: Code Wars!
What is it?
Code Wars is an epic online platform on their website that lets you sharpen your coding skills by competing in programming challenges.
How does it work?
It works like this – you sign up for an account and choose your preferred programming language to code in (Java, of course!). Based on a short placement test, you’ll be assigned a starting “kyu” rank to determine the difficulty level that matches your abilities.
As a beginning coder, you might start at 8th kyu and unlock your way up through the ranks by completing katas – coding challenges focused on topics like logic, algorithms, data structures and more. Some katas have you build methods and classes, while others involve fixing bugs in broken code.
The best part is you can track your progress with a personal stats dashboard showing your ranking, honor points earned, challenges attempted and completed over time. As you level up by conquering katas, you’ll unlock harder kyu levels and open up new language options too. They even have categories if you want to focus on a specific skillset, like debugging, data science, cryptography, games, and even tutorials!
It really is brilliant – Code Wars gamifies the coding grind, letting you show off achievements to friends and employers. No boring textbooks or lectures – just hands-on coding practice through game-style training! Plus you’ll join a huge community of like-minded programmers to exchange tips and encouragement.
They offer more than just Java!
Of course they are constantly adding more languages, check out the current languages available to spar with and even the ones in beta coming soon! https://docs.codewars.com/languages/
